The summer weather has arrived! and to be honest we don't get these sunny weekends very often, therefore it was a no brainer
to jump into our vans on Saturday and make our way to Elstree, nearby The 100 Acre Wood (yes...that Winnie the Pooh forest).
After only 45mins of driving, we rolled up in Aldenham Country Park.
The sun was shining, the grass was lush and we had some cute neighbours.
The kids had plenty of space to run around wielding their cricket bats without injuring anyone (always a good thing) while the parents set up. The camping ground doesn't come with fire pits, luckily we always bring our own. You could however order bags of wood, kindle and fire starters and a ginormous box of meat. They call it the BBQ kit and it contains:
4x beef burgers
6x lamb kebabs
6x pork sausages
4x chicken drumsticks
800g pork ribs
And guess where that box came from? It's sister farm: Church Farm where we camped last week! It was way too much meat obviously but it was pretty tasty on the BBQ, especially the ribs.
It got quite damp in the late evening, but around the fire place it was warm and cosy. I was glad that we stashed our camping chair covers in the van overnight as the next morning everything was covered in dew.
But what a joy to wake up at the break of dawn with the sun streaming through the windshield, only to pull the covers over your head and decided to sleep for a couple of more hours. I later decided to buy a blackout windshield cover as the temperature in the van rose rapidly once the sun was out.
Our musical talent delivered some decent cover songs for breakfast, others delivered breakfast to our four legged neighbours. After a stint at the adventure park next door (with zip lines and swings and all that fun) we set off for a walk through Winnie the Pooh land, The 100 Acre Wood.
And finally reached our goal: the pub for the obligatory Sunday Roast and Sunday Pint.
We stopped at The Waggon & Horses and I enjoyed a proper beef Sunday roast which left me so full I probably don't need to eat for a week. And of course a chilled pint to round off a sunny camping trip.
Our rating? Would go again
Campsite: wide open field with a gorgeous oak tree and friendly cows. No compost toilets but instead portaloos which are always just a bit gross. Only one wash station to do the dishes. The grass was a bit long, so you better not drop a fork or a knife as you might not find it again. There is an onsite friendly guard who walks the grounds at night to ensure everyone is safe and happy. He reminds you that should you have an emergency of any kind, you can call the number on the wristband you get given when you register.
Best bit: walking through The 100 Acre Forest and spotting all the Winnie the Pooh references.
